Teaching American History Grants

The Brooklyn Historical Society is proud to be a part of several federally funded Teaching American History Grants. Along with the New York City Department of Education, BHS works with the American Social History Project, City Lore, Columbia University/Teacher's College, the Gotham Center for New York City History, Henry Street Settlement, Historic House Trust, Museum of the City of New York , New-York Historical Society and South Street Seaport. We bring to these collaborations our fine library and museum resources, much of which revolves around and interprets the history of our nation. Our materials and qualified education staff help to link the exciting events that took place in NYC to national events.

The goal of the program is to support programs that raise student achievement by improving teachers' knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of American history. Currently, we are working on projects Regions 3,4 5, 7, 8 and with teachers from every borough in two city-wide projects.

For more information or to find out how to get involved, please call Amy DeSalvo, Education Coordinator 718-222-4111 x237
