Project CHART (Cultural Heritage, Access, Research, and Technology)

Pratt Institute and Brooklyn Public Library and Brooklyn Museum

Pratt Institute’s School of Information and Library Science (SILS) in collaboration with Brooklyn Public Library, Brooklyn Museum, and Brooklyn Historical Society are pleased to announce Project CHART (Cultural Heritage, Access, Research and Technology). Pratt-SILS and its three partner institutions have previously worked together on projects for access and preservation using Pratt interns, eg. M-Lead at the Brooklyn Museum most recently. This project builds on these collaborative activities and mutual interests in advancing education in the area of cultural heritage and digital management, with the goal of better serving libraries, archives and museums in the digital age.

CHART_ImagesProject CHART is focused on digitizing the historic images of Brooklyn, and offers students exceptional educational opportunities to master key aspects of digital imaging ranging from scanning, creation of metadata, outreach and digital curation. In the first year, the CHART team has been digitizing historic Brooklyn photographs and developing ways to showcase these newly created digital assets. Project results will be disseminated through a shared website, conference presentations and publications. This website will also act as a community-building tool, incorporating social media and link to appropriate professional and local listservs. Through these initiatives, Project CHART interacts with the emerging field of digital curation, in correspondence with Pratt-SILS’ cultural informatics and digital management curricula.

The digitizing aspect of Project CHART officially began in January 2011, and will continue until 2013. Project CHART is being funded through an IMLS grant sponsored by the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian program.
