The Prospect Park exhibit photography collection contains 33 items and ranges in date from 1877 to circa 1975, with the bulk of materials dating from 1889 to 1897. The collection includes oversize photographs, prints, stereographs, and postcards. Items in the collection show scenes of Prospect Park, such as landscapes, statues, arches, bridges, lakes, and recreational activities, namely bicycling and ice skating. Also included is a photograph of Colored School No. 2 in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn. Items in the collection were part of a Brooklyn Historical Society exhibit on Prospect Park in the late 1980s.

Charles Turnbull correspondence, 1778 – 1791

The Charles Turnbull correspondence spans the period 1778 to 1791 and measures 0.1 linear feet. The correspondence consists of a letter copybook containing correspondence between Charles Turnbull and his family members and friends. Turnbull’s letters focus on international commerce between the United States, London, and India.

Charles Turnbull (b. circa 1754) served as a captain in the Pennsylvania militia during the Revolutionary War and was held as a British prisoner on Long Island. After being paroled, Turnbull became a Major of Artillery in the Continental Army. Following the war, he bought a 150 acre farm in Bedford, Long Island (later part of the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn). Turnbull was appointed High Sheriff of Kings County in 1789.

Harvey Murdock Brooklyn and New York houses volume, circa 1893

One volume, circa 1893, containing 68 prints and illustrations of houses constructed by Harvey Murdock. Images in the collection show exterior and interior views of homes, as well as illustrations of homes under construction. Houses shown in this collection are located in the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Park Slope, Brooklyn Heights, and Bedford-Stuyvesant, as well as Manhattan. An index at the beginning of the volume identifies architects, homeowners, and the width of the home’s entrance. Each house is identified by street name, and the images are arranged by neighborhood.

Harvey Murdock was a New York City-based builder and contractor who worked during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In addition to residences, Murdock supervised construction of hotels, apartment houses, business buildings, club houses, and country homes. He worked at 140 Nassau Street in Manhattan and lived on Montgomery Place in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn.

The Viola Hargrave collection of Bedford-Stuyvesant photographs dates from circa 1960 to 1979. The collection contains 74 black-and-white photographs taken by William Cox, Michael George, James Hurley, and Viola Hargrave. Images in the collection document the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant, particularly Hancock Street, Jefferson Avenue, and Quincy Street. Photographs show housing, including row houses, apartment houses, and frame houses; churches; and commercial buildings, such as banks and fraternal organizations. Verna E. Smith family photographs, circa 1910 to 1930

The Verna E. Smith family photographs consist of 13 black-and-white photographic prints and three black-and-white film negatives, dating from circa 1910 to 1930. Included in the collection are both studio and informal portraits of Gilman L. Smith (b. 1898), informal portraits of Emma Karstensen Smith (b. 1902), and group portraits that include Gilman L. Smith, as well as his friends and family. Several photographs show Gilman Smith in a sailors uniform. Other photographs show street views of the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, where it is presumed the Smiths lived. The photographs range in size from 2.5 x 3.5 inches to 5 x 7 inches.

Gilman L. Smith was born on February 15, 1898 and grew up in Brooklyn. On February 23, 1929, he married Emma Karstensen (b. 1902) who was also from Brooklyn. Gilman and Emma Smith had at least one child, Verna E. Smith.

The Tompkins Avenue Congregational Church collection dates from 1886 to 1927 and is housed in one half manuscript box. Materials in the collection include yearbooks and programs from church services. Yearbooks provide an overview of member activities and include annual reports, treasurers’ reports, reports of organizations within the church, committee member lists, and a membership roll of the church congregation with member names and addresses.

The Tompkins Avenue Congregational Church was organized in 1875 and originally met in a schoolhouse on Tompkins Avenue in Brooklyn, N.Y. As the membership increased, a larger building on Park Avenue was used to hold services. In 1888, the church’s chapel was erected at Tompkins Avenue and McDonough Street in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn. Tompkins Avenue Congregational Church boasted a particularly large membership during its first 40 years–for instance, over 3,000 members were listed in the 1926 yearbook. In 1942, the church merged with the Flatbush Congregational Church.

Household of Faith Church collection, 1886 – 1922

The Household of Faith Church collection dates from 1886 to 1922 and is housed in one manuscript box. The collection contains seven bound volumes that include reports, the church membership roll, clerks’ books, and minutes. Reports and minutes document business meetings of the church, as well as meetings of the Board of Trustees. Clerks’ books record baptisms and new members joining the church, as well as regular administrative decisions made at the church. Church rolls list members of the congregation and record member addresses, and dates joined and dismissed from the church.

The Household of Faith congregation was organized in 1886 under the direction of Rev. William N. Pile, who led the church for two decades. In its first two years, the Household of Faith held services at temporary locations on Grand Street, then Liberty Hall at Gates and Nostrand Avenues in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn. A new and permanent building for the church was opened in 1888, located on Greene Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Household of Faith followed the Adventist movement, and was also known as First Christian Advent Church of Brooklyn in the early 20th century.

The volume contains 85 prints with scenes and buildings of Brooklyn, N.Y., as well as captions detailing the images and the history of Brooklyn. Prints in the volume depict parks and monuments such as Prospect Park and Green-Wood Cemetery, clubs, churches, banks, schools, and municipal buildings in Brooklyn. The neighborhoods of Brooklyn Heights, Downtown Brooklyn, Red Hook, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Prospect Heights, Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Bay Ridge, Fort Hamilton, Brighton Beach, and Coney Island are included.
