The Conklin and Bedell families papers (1839-1917) contain financial records and some personal correspondence generated by Ebenezer Conklin of Brooklyn, New York, and his descendants. The bulk of the records were generated by Ebenezer Conklin, and mostly concern household expenses, repairs and improvements made on Conklin’s several properties. The records of Nathaniel Augustus Conklin and Sarah Bedell, two of Ebenezer’s children, continue the history of Ebenezer’s properties. The small amount of correspondence contains Civil War letters, and a copy of the General Orders of the 19th Army Corps Headquarters at Camp Russell, Virginia. The collection also holds a cash accounts book and a pew ledger of the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Bushwick for the years 1876-1884.

The Town of Bushwick town meeting minutes are housed in a single bound volume and feature minutes of the meetings of the Town of Bushwick, N.Y. (currently the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn) from its incorporation in 1841 until 1851. The first meeting was held April 7, 1841 at Martin R. Meeker’s home. Among the first officials elected in the town were: Nicholas Wyckoff, Supervisor; Abraham Vandervoort, Town Clerk; and Jacob Suydam, Charles DeBevoise, and Lambert Wyckoff, Assessors.

The Sunday School teachers of the Old Bushwick Reformed Church, located at 15 Himrod Street in Brooklyn, N.Y., met on a monthly basis at a chosen teacher’s home to discuss school business. The meeting minutes are housed in a single bound volume and record topics discussed, attendance to the meetings, and the Sunday School’s constitution and bylaws.

These images were captured in the months after the July 13th Blackout of 1977. They were taken by two photographers and cover various locations in the neighborhood of Bushwick. They are predominately potographs of burned-out houses, apartments and stores. Some of the images show the fires being fought while others show the subsequent destruction or the reconstruction of the ruins.

This collection contains one volume, dated 1879 to 1884. The volume contains records of the Willoughby Avenue Baptist Church, including meeting minutes, financial reports, and accounts.
Willoughby Avenue Baptist Church, once known as the First Baptist Church of Bushwick, was organized in 1854. The church went through several location sites and name changes before it solidified in 1878 on Willoughby Avenue near Broadway in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn. A large group of congregants left the church in 1875 to form the Trinity Baptist Church, and in the late 1880s, the congregation merged with the Greene Avenue Baptist Church.

The Morgan family papers, dated 1883 to 1929, contain ephemera and photographs from Thomas Morgan and members of his family. Items include two merit rewards from P.S. 56 to Thomas C. Morgan, as well as a merit reward from an unidentified school; an admission ticket to the St. George Swimming Club, located at the Hotel St. George; a map of sewers on Bushwick Avenue between Vigelius Street (now known as Jefferson Avenue) and Woodbine Street, denoting the home of Thomas and Charlotte Morgan; and a court order to Charlotte E. Morgan regarding the estate of George Morgan, presumably Thomas C. and Charlotte E. Morgan’s grandfather. Photographs in the collection include four images of the Bushwick and Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhoods in Brooklyn: two prints of the Morgan home at 1173 Bushwick Avenue; one print of the Bushwick Avenue Congregational Church; and a group portrait of students at P.S. 26, located at the time in Bedford-Stuyvesant near Quincy Street.
Three generations of the George Morgan family lived in Brooklyn, N.Y. during the late 19th century. George (d. 1895) and Caroline E. Morgan (d. circa 1896) resided at 119 Halsey Street in the present-day neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant. Thomas and Charlotte Musson (d. 1933) Morgan lived at 1173 Bushwick Avenue in Bushwick, along with their children Charlotte E. (1882-1961) and Thomas C. (b. circa 1884) Morgan.

One photostat copy of a certificate, dated 1702, appointing Peter Praa a Captain in the Bushwick Militia in the regiment of Colonel Jacob Van Cortland. The certificate is issued by Edward Viscount Cornbury, Her Majesty’s Captain and Governor in the English Province of New York.
Peter (Pieter) Praa (1655-1740) was a prominent landowner in the town of Bushwick in Kings County. He was appointed a Captain in the Bushwick Militia in 1702.

The Long Island Historical Society initiated the Puerto Rican Oral History Project in 1973. Using funding from the New York State Council on the Arts, over seventy-five interviews were conducted documenting the experiences of Brooklyn residents who arrived from Puerto Rico between 1917 and 1940. This collection includes recordings and transcripts of interviews conducted primarily between 1973 and 1975. Also included are newspaper clippings, brochures, booklets about Brooklyn’s Puerto Rican community, and administrative information on how the project was developed, carried out, and evaluated.
Recordings of these interviews and accompanying transcripts are available in the Brooklyn Historical Society’s Othmer Library.
