A handwritten manuscript of an address given by George Hall to the Brooklyn Board of Trustees of Brooklyn, upon his election as Mayor.

George Hall (1795-1868) was born in the town of Flatbush and attended Erasmus High School. In 1826 and 1832 he was elected trustee of Brooklyn’s third ward. In 1834, as Brooklyn became incorporated, the Board of Alderman selected him as the new city’s Mayor.

Transcriptions of Dutch legal documents on Flatbush, Flatlands, and Gravesend, circa 1656-1850

English transcriptions of Dutch legal documents concerning the towns of Flatlands, Flatbush, and Gravesend. Some appear to have been copied from official records of the Dutch government of New Amsterdam (later New York City) and to have been written by Peter Stuyvesant, the last governor to lead New Amsterdam before the colony was seized by the British in 1664. The original documents date from 1656 to 1719, while the transcriptions were created circa 1850. The repository at which the original Dutch documents are housed is not known.

Nine volumes containing property tax assessments for Wards 1 through 9 in the City of Brooklyn for the year 1841. Each volume number corresponds to the number of the ward in which it was used to record assessments. In each volume, assessments are organized by street name. For each street name, the volumes list the names of property owners on that street, descriptions and values of the properties, and amount taxed. Volume 6, containing property assessments for Ward 6, also includes assessments for the year 1840.
