The Antonia Denis collection spans the period 1948 to 1983 and consists of correspondence, administrative documents, financial records, photocopied newspaper articles, calling cards, certificates, newsletters, pamphlets, and other ephemera relating to Denis’s work with the cultural organizations La Casa de Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rican Pioneers Parade, as well as her political activism and work with the Betances Democratic Club and other organizations. A small amount of papers pertaining to Denis’s personal life are also included. Several newspaper articles, while not relating directly to Denis, contain information on the general political, social, and cultural affairs of Brooklyn and New York City’s Latino community. Over half the materials in the collection are written in Spanish, while the remaining items are in English.
Antonia Denis, a social and political activist, arrived in Brooklyn, N.Y. from Baja Vega, Puerto Rico during World War I. She soon became a major figure in several Brooklyn-based organizations, including La Casa de Puerto Rico, the Puerto Rican Pioneers Parade, and the Betances Democratic Club. These organizations advocated for political and social equality, celebrated Puerto Rican history and culture, and administered anti-poverty, cultural, and educational programs for Brooklyn’s Puerto Rican community.

Gertrude Vanderbilt-Smith’s diary is housed in a single handwritten volume and spans the period 1855-1864. The diary is divided into two portions, the first of which contains written accounts of Smith’s visits to friends in varying parts of New York State. These friends include Brooklyn figures such as John Ditmars, Henry Ditmars, George Fox, the Peet family, Vandervoorts, Lotts, and Schoonmakers.

The Pilgrim Laundry photographs consists of six black-and-white photographs (five of which are mounted) showing interior views of the Brooklyn-based Pilgrim Laundry, dating from circa 1910. The photographs show laundry workers (primarily women) on the job using industrial laundry machinery of the period. There is also one view of a cook in the company kitchen preparing food for workers.

This collection contains a poem written by Genevieve Earle to her nephew, Joseph K. Lane, on his 21st birthday, and one photograph of Earle standing on the steps of a home in Tupper Lake, N.Y.
Genevieve B. Earle (1883-1956) was head of the Brooklyn branch of the League of Women Voters, and was the first woman elected to the New York City Council, where she served as minority leader.

Lucy Maria Tappan Bowen is more well-known as one of the women with whom Henry Ward Beecher had allegedly had an affair in the early 1860s, around the time some of these letters were written.

This collection contains the administrative, financial, and regulatory records of Brooklyn Court No. 4 of the Order of the Amaranth of the State of New York, a women’s social and philanthropic society closely affiliated with the Freemasons. The Brooklyn Court’s regular meetings took place in the Johnston Building at 6 Nevins Street in Brooklyn. The records date back to 1897, the year of the Order’s inception, and record the activities of Brooklyn Court No. 4 through 1941. The inclusive dates of the collection are 1897 to 1961.

The Institution for Young Ladies on Brooklyn Heights, also known as the Greenleaf Female Institute, was founded and established in 1837 by Alfred Greenleaf. Located at 106 Pierrepont Street at Clinton Street, it was a well-known girls’ school that catered to wealthy Brooklyn families.

The Mary A. Titcomb scrapbooks consist of seven volumes of clippings, 1865-1881. The scrapbooks contain clippings of the weekly magazine series that were written by Titcomb and published in Harper’s Bazar (known today as Harper’s Bazaar) and Harper’s Weekly for the publishers Harper & Brothers. The collection is organized into three series: “Mrs. Typeset’s Diary,” 1867-1870; “Says and Doings,” 1870-1881; and “Home and Foreign Gossip,” 1865-1880.
The scrapbooks contain the complete run of all three of the weekly series written by Titcomb.
